How to Make a Flower Pot Wind Chime

If you’ve got a few spare flower pots in your garden this season, we have the perfect project for you: a homemade flower pot wind chime! This wind chime is easy to make and you can get the whole family involved, too. The children can paint the pots and then you can take over when it comes to varnishing and threading them. They’ll become a lovely string of upside down flower pots that ‘sing’ in the wind!

You Will Need:

METHOD:

  1. Using acrylic paints, decorate the flower pots in any way you like. You have creative freedom at this stage; you can paint them in one solid colour or create fun designs. Allow the pots to dry completely before moving on to the next stage.
  2. Using a clean paintbrush, apply an even layer of acrylic varnish over the exterior of the flower pots; this will seal the paint and protect the pots from weather damage. Allow the pots to dry completely before moving on to the next stage.
  3. Cut a length of cord that is long enough to hang all the plant pots on the same length of cord. You must leave enough cord at the ends to create a looped handle (for hanging) and to hang a charm at the bottom.
  4. Once you’ve cut your required length of cord, create a loop at the end and tie it with a double knot. Pull the looped cord through the centre of a large wooden or plastic bead and push it down to the knot. Tie another double knot above the bead to give it added security.
  5. Thread the cord though the hole in the base of one flower pot and push the pot up to the threaded bead; the flower pot should be downward facing. Thread another bead onto the cord and slide it right up to the inside of the pot (the bead must be larger than the hole in bottom of the pot). Like before, tie a double knot to secure the bead and pot in place.
  6. Repeat the process again until all the flower pots have been strung together. They all need to be downward facing; your wind chime should look like a loose stack of flower pots when hung up.
  7. To complete the wind chime, you can hang a charm or embellishment at the end of the cord. We suggest hanging an MDF charm (in any design you like!). You can paint a plain MDF charm and then coat it with varnish to protect it from weather damage - the choice is yours! You can hang any embellishment you like or nothing at all.
