Got a loved one's birthday coming up? No celebration would be complete without a delicious cake, and with so many amazing ideas out there, it can be hard to know which to choose! From novelty creations to artistic wonders, we've taken our pick of the best that are sure to wow your friends and family.
This is a great way to add a simple yet striking effect to a cake, and the classic flavour combination is sure to be a winner. To make it, simply cover the top and sides of a Victoria sponge cake with cream, then thinly slice strawberries and stick them in neat rows to the sides of the cake. The fruit's flesh adds a beautiful effect, and it requires minimal effort, too!
Little princesses are bound to love this classic cake. To make the skirt, you'll need three different sized cake tins – a simple way to do this is with a bundt tin for the base, a medium-sized heatproof bowl for the middle layer, and a cupcake for the top. Bake three cakes in these tins, then layer them up, sticking them together with icing. Create a thick frosting for the sides – try buttercream – and cover the cakes to ensure a smooth finish. Then get creative with colours and decorations!
With so many wacky food colourings available, why stop at coloured icing? To wow a birthday girl or boy, create an ombre cake by colouring four to five cake layers in different shades of the same colour, then pile them up high and sandwich with white frosting. You can either cover the edges, to make for a rainbow surprise when they cut the cake, or leave the edges uncovered to make a feature out of them.
Perfect for budding astronauts, this space-themed cake is surprisingly easy to make. Start by covering a circular cake with black or navy fondant icing, then create each of the planets out of the correct coloured fondant icing, adding fondant rings to Saturn. Make the sun from yellow-orange fondant icing, then put on top in the centre. Stick the planets on the cake around the outside of the sun. Pipe the solar system's rings in white icing
There's probably no better crowd-pleaser than chocolate! To make a truly decadent treat, decorate a three-tiered cake with white chocolate icing, then add a drip effect to the top using milk chocolate icing. Pile it high with the birthday girl or boy's favourite chocolate treats, and prepare for a look of pure joy on their face when they receive it!
A pun-tastic creation that's sure to make a cheese-lover's day. Start by making a deep, circular cake or layer two thinner cakes with icing. Next, cut a quarter out of the cake and layer it on top. Cover both parts with yellow fondant icing, making small circular indents to represent holey cheese, and cover the sides with a darker shade of yellow for the rind. Finish by making fondant mice and have them poke out of your cheese creation!
