6 Birthday party craft ideas

1. Party bags

With some plain paper bags and a little creativity, you can create amazing party bags to wow guests. There are so many different designs out there, but some of our favourites are zoo animal party bags. To make, cut out different animals' head shapes from coloured paper, making them about the same width as the party bag. Create their facial features from coloured card and glue onto the faces, then glue to the outside of party bags. Finish by filling the bags with little treats – toys, stationery, sweets, cake, or whatever you fancy!

2. Felt birthday banner

Coloured felt is a dream to work with, since it doesn't fray, minimising the amount of sewing you need to do. To make a simple banner, download or draw a letter template for all the letters of “Happy Birthday” (plus the birthday girl or boy's name, if you wish). Cut the letters out of different coloured felt, and stitch to a length of string. Hang your banner in pride of place for guests to see!

3. DIY Invites

There are so many creative ideas out there for party invites, it can be hard to know what to choose! One idea we love is to make fairy wand invitations – they'd be perfect for a little girl's birthday! To make, start with some long wooden sticks, sparkly paper, plain paper, and a large star die cut such as the TODO Super Stars Die Set . Cut out a larger star from the shiny card and a smaller one from plain paper, repeating for the number of invitations needed. Then affix the smaller stars to the larger ones and write the invitation text on top, finishing by gluing to stitcks to make pretty fairy wands – all that's left to do is hand them out!

4. Pom-pom garland

Another fun garland idea, this is perfect for avid knitters who have spare yarn hanging around (and a little patience!) Using a pom-pom maker such as the Clover Pom-pom maker or a circular disk of card with a hole in it, create pom-poms by wrapping yarn repeatedly round and cutting the threads. String together different coloured pom-poms with a length of yarn and hang up in the party venue – it's sure to put a smile on guests' faces!

5. Photo props

Creating photo props is a great way to ensure you have lots of lovely memories of the special day. To make, gather templates for your desired props – such as glasses, lips, moustaches, various hats, bow ties, speech bubbles – then cut from coloured card. Then glue them onto wooden sticks for party guests to hold. You could go even further with your DIY photobooth by creating a fabric backdrop or obtaining an instant or Polaroid camera for vintage-style snaps – it's up to you how far you take it!

6. Number collage

For an extra special birthday (with a few obligatory embarassing photos), trying making a collage from pictures of the birthday girl or boy. Choose old and new photos and arrange into the shape of the age they're turning, then stick onto card and display somewhere for all to see! It'll be a simple yet effective and personal decoration.
