With the recent increase in knowledge about plastic consumption, and hashtags such as #plasticfreejuly and #zerowaste trending on social media, upcycling is a great way to give a new lease of life to old objects. With that in mind, we give you these six projects for turning everyday objects into quirky home décor
An old metal colander can be rejuvenated to create a cute hanging basket for a plant. To make it, simply cut a circle of landscape fabric to line the inside, tie jute string throught the handles to hang it, and pop your chosen plant in with enough soil to keep it stable.
Once a box of tissues has been used up, don't throw it out! Cut off the lid to create an open box, then glue toilet roll tubes standing up inside, to create little compartments for pens, rulers, scissors, and so on. Finish the desk tidy by covering the outside with your choice of coloured or patterned paper – such as this Summer Botanicals Paper.
Aluminium tins can be turned into so many different things. To make these pots, soak the tins in water to remove the labels, then select pretty lengths of lace, fabric and patterned paper to decorate them with. Simply cut a strip of your chosen material and glue to the outside of your can. These will make great storage pots for make-up, paintbrushes, craft supplies, cutlery.... the list goes on!
With minimal effort, you can turn quaint teacups into a kitsch home decoration. You can use any old cups you have, or try visiting charity shops for some great deals on vintage china cups. To make them, simply melt Gelly Candle Wax in a pan, put a wick into the centre of each cup (holding in place with a pencil either side), and pour the molten wax into the cup. Add a few drops of essential oil for a calming scent, leave the wax to cool and they're ready to go!
With an old wooden coat hanger, a few cup hooks and a bit of DIY, you can make a cool hanger for all your favourite necklaces and bracelets. Simply attach the hooks along the bottom of the hanger and hang up your favourite pieces to put on display.
This is a simple way to create a unique, standout decoration for your home. You'll need a plain china dinner plate with a high-rimmed outer lip, a circular mirror that fits inside the centre of the plate, and some home décor paint, such as this Viva Decor Maya Gold Set. Use the pens to create a design around the outside of the plate, leave to dry, then glue the mirror to the centre. Attach a hanging fixture to the back if you wish to hang the mirror from the wall.
