5 Makes for an Afternoon Tea Party

An afternoon tea party is quintessentially British – and it's the perfect springtime activity to pass a few hours. We can’t enjoy the usual luxury of visiting cafes and tea rooms at the moment, so why not recreate the joy at home? Using materials you’re sure to have in your stash, you can create an afternoon tea to remember. If the weather’s nice, you could even take your creations out into the garden to enjoy in the sunshine!

5 Makes for an Afternoon Tea Party

1. Placemat

Having afternoon tea at your own table in the dining room might not feel quite as special compared with a fancy hotel or tea room. By creating placemats just for the occasion, you can ensure that the event feels like a classy upgrade to your usual tea and cake breaks. Simply grab a rectangle of material, add some backing fabric, and get decorating! Embroider a message and some pretty springtime flowers, then cut out a teapot shape from a ditsy patterned fabric and applique it onto the mat. Perfect for catching any cake crumbs or drips of tea!

2. Invitations

While you can’t invite people over to enjoy a tea party with you just yet, the people who live with you would always appreciate an invite! A handwritten note will make the event feel extra-special. You could also prepare some invitations ready for a big celebration in the future, and just fill out the details when you’re ready to host. Alternatively, why not invite your friends to a virtual tea party? Check out the tutorial here to find out how to make this pretty floral design, complete with envelope.

3. Decorations

To set the scene and recreate a real tea party, you need some decorations, and luckily there are so many fabulous products you can use to help you achieve the look you want. Try the wonderful Mad Hatters Tea Party Stamp From The Art stamps alongside some colourful ink to create a magical Alice In Wonderland theme, or keep it classic with the Tea for You Decoupage sets from Marianne Designs, featuring all the afternoon tea essentials. Or, with a little bit of crafty magic, the Debbi Moore MDF 'Cup of Tea' Plaque can be brought to life and work as a fabulous addition to your tea party – and the best part is you can leave it in your kitchen after the party is over for a pretty decoration all year round.

4. Cake stand

A tiered cake stand is an essential component in any tea party, and you can easily craft your own at home with things you probably already have around the house. Using some cardboard and a few soup cans, plus a few other crafty essentials, you can whip up an impressive stand for your goodies in the morning before you tuck in. Check out this tutorial for a step-by-step on how to make your own.

5. Cakes

Let’s be honest, one of the main reasons we love afternoon tea is because of the cake! Homemade options nearly always taste better, and plus, it’s a fun activity to do while staying at home. If you’ve got some bananas getting a bit too ripe in the fruit bowl, check out this banana cake recipe, or if your sweet tooth is really calling out, why not try a super-sweet drip-effect butterscotch cake?
