Altered Embroidery Hoop

Create this beautiful mixed media make for a loved one using Helen Kirkham’s step-by-steps

You will need:

  • Pencil
  • Paintbrush
  • Scissors
  • Sponge
  • Wooden embroidery hoop
  • Cadence white gesso
  • Cadence baby blue very chalky paint
  • Cadence baby pink very chalky paint
  • Cadence ashy rose relief paste
  • Cadence Hybrid acrylic mild Blue
  • Cadence Hybrid acrylic faded pink
  • Cadence pastel pearl fabric paint baby pink
  • Light pink button
  • Tonic studios floral crafters tool set
  • The Crafters workshop well rounded stencil
  • Palette knife
  • Nuvo light gold sequins
  • Stamperia Imagine scrapbook paper pad

  1. Draw around the outside edge of the hoop on to the patterned paper. Cut the circle and gap out.

    Helen’s helpful hint

    Make sure you have the embroidery hoop size that it will be at the end, otherwise the backing paper will not be the correct size.

  1. Paint the hoop with the white gesso, then blue and pink chalky paint.

    When painting the three different colours don’t wait for each layer to dry, which will create a more interesting layered look.

  1. Using the palette knife and relief paste, add it on to the backing paper through the stencil.

    Allow the relief paste to completely dry before moving on to the next step.

  1. Using a sponge and the blue and pink acrylic paint, add it on to the backing paper through the stencil. Then add some paint splatters to the paper by adding some of the paint on to a paintbrush and tap it over the top of the paper.

  1. Add some drops to the backing paper using the fabric pearl paint. Then glue the paper to the back of the embroidery hoop

  1. Using stored image AR-A015 from the Scan and cut, resize it to 1.50 by 1.50 inches and duplicate it sixteen times. Then cut out of some of the backing paper.

  1. Using the floral tool, shape each of the flowers and stick one on top of the other to create eight flowers.

  1. Add some glue to the centre of the flower and before it dries sprinkle some sequins on top, to create and centre to the flower.

  1. Add some sequins to the backing paper, then wrap the twine around the embroidery hoop five times and glue at the back. Add some twine to the centre of the button and glue to the twine.

  1. Glue the MDF sentiment and the flowers to the inside of the embroidery hoop. Add the ribbon to the top.
