5 crafts to keep you cool this summer

Beat the heat this season and create these fun makes

5 crafts to keep you cool this summer

1 Rainbow frozen yoghurt lollies

Nothing beats an ice pop on a scorching day, so first you'll need to gather the essentials: • 3 cups vanilla or plain Greek yoghurt • 1/2 cup black raspberries • 1/2 cup chopped kiwi fruit • 1/2 cup chopped pineapple • 1/2 cup chopped mango • 1/2 cup chopped strawberries • honey for sweetening, if desired • Ice lolly moulds

METHOD

Scoop ½ cup servings of the yoghurt into 5 separate bowls. Puree your fruits separately, then stir each into the bowls of yoghurt. Scoop the yoghurt mixtures into your lolly moulds to form a rainbow effect. Freeze for 4-6 hours before serving.

2 Decoupage a fan

Add a bit of character to a plain handheld fan by printing out a selection of images before covering it entirely. Cut out your photos and use decoupage or PVA glue to ensure that they adhere to your fan. Keep your newly designed make close by, ready to be deployed the moment the weather gets a bit humid.

3 Doggie cooling mat

It’s not just humans that need to keep cool and with this easy-to-make mat, you can ensure your four-legged friend is happy, too! You'll need fleece material, fabric oddments, ice packs and a sewing machine. Sew squares of fabric oddments to the back of your fleece fabric to create pockets, freeze your ice packs, then tuck them into the pockets. Turn the fleece over and put it down for your pooch to lie on.

4 Easy-make kaftan

For an everyday summer wardrobe staple, we suggest making a floaty kaftan – perfect at keeping you cool when a heatwave strikes. All you'll need is gorgeous fabric, scissors and basic sewing knowledge. Ensure that you measure from your neckline towards the centre of your shoulder to decide how wide you'd like the neck opening to be.

Alternatively you can add a v-neck design for a stylish look. Don't forget to sew the sides of your kaftan, leaving as much room as you'd like for your arms to go through.

5 Decorate your drink jugs

Revamp a plain jug using paint and paintbrushes. Stick to summery-themed designs when painting your jug to complement the gorgeous weather outside. Once the jug is dry, fill it with your favourite thirst quencher and drink away!
