Crafting with items you have at home

Make a lovely garden gate wall hanging using items you will have already within your crafty stash

Time it takes to make: 30 minutes

Skill level: advanced

You will need:

  • Lolly pop sticks
  • String
  • Ribbon
  • Embellishments – wooden/ metal/ buttons/ Gems
  • Printed or stamped sentiment
  • Patterned and plain paper/ cardstock
  • Pva glue or hot glue gun

  1. Make the garden gate - Glue together the lolly pop sticks to form a garden gate as shown using either pva glue or a hot glue gun, leave to one side to dry. Once dry attach either string or ribbon to the top of the frame to make a loop for hanging the frame. Cut a length of string approximately 2 inches larger than the width of your lolly pop stick frame. Tie a knot on both sides and glue to sides of frame.

  2. cut 5 small squares of patterned paper (roughly 1 inch). With the paper in front of you find the middle on the bottom of the square, cut diagonally to the top right corner then cut again to the top left corner. This will give you a bunting triangle, use this as a template to cut the remaining squares. Attach the 5 bunting triangles to the string by gluing the top of the bunting.

  3. Make a selection of flowers from paper, cardstock or fomarian. You can make flowers using dies, fussy cutting floral stamped images, paper folding or just simply cutting a circle of paper/ cardstock and spiralling to make a flower.

  4. To make a spiral flower, die cut or freehand a circle, from the outer edge start cutting or tearing (for a more rustic look) a spiral to the centre of the circle leaving an area in the centre to glue the rolled up flower on. Starting from the outer spiral roll the paper/ card stock using a quilling tool, tweezers or just rolling between your fingers, following the contour of the spiral. Place some PVA glue or hot glue at the centre of the spiral and glue together.

You will need at least 6 flowers (top tip - visually it’s more appealing to have items in sets of 3) and glue these to the top left and bottom right of your frame. If you can use different size flowers, this will give a more realistic look. Glue your sentiment to the top left of the frame, tucking it under your flowers.

  5. attach a few embellishments from your stash also small ribbon tails top and bottom to finish off your project.
