Front Zip Project Bag

You will need:

  • 1/2 meter Outer fabric
  • 1/2 meter lining fabric
  • Contrast sections fabric 15cm x 36cm
  • 1/2 meter iron on medium weight interfacing
  • Zip 36 cm
  • Thread
  • Pins
  • Ruler / tape measure
  • Scissors / rotary cutter
  • Iron

Time to Make: 1-2 hours

Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate


  1. Desktop Calendar

    Cut out your fabric:

    • Outer fabric Front 36cm x 20 cm
    • Lining fabric Front 36cm x 28cm
    • Back 36cm x 33cm
    • Back 36cm x 33cm
    • Contrast 36cm x 7cm
    • Top front 36cm x 7cm
    • Contrast 36cm x 9cm

    Iron on interfacing to all outer fabric.

  2. Desktop Calendar

    Pin and sew 36 x 9 contrast fabric to the top of front outer fabric . Along the 20cm edge. Right sides together paying attention to pattern direction. Press the seam.

  3. Desktop Calendar

    Pin the right side of the zip to the right side of the outer fabric, with the right side of the lining facing the right side of the outer fabric . Stitch along the top of the zip . Use a zipper foot to sew close to the zip. Start with the zip open a few centimeters. Stop sewing before the zip tag. With needle down, lift foot and close the zip. Lower foot and continue to the end. Press away from zip.

  4. Desktop Calendar

    With 36x7 lining fabric right side facing . Pin the top of the zip along the top edge with the 36 x 7 outer fabric wrong side facing . Sew along the zip. With the zip open to start as before.

  5. Desktop Calendar

    Top stitch along both sides of the zip.

  6. Desktop Calendar

    With inner fabric back and front, right sides facing . And outer front and back fabric right sides facing on top. Pin the top edge and sew together. Press the seam.

  7. Desktop Calendar

    Match up the bottom edges of the outer fabric and stitch. Do the same with the inner fabric but leave a 10cm opening in the middle of the seam. Back stitch to strengthen this gap.

  8. Desktop Calendar

    Stitch along all layers of the side seams. Keep the zip open about 10cm for turning the right way but pin the zip into the correct place. When sewn trim corners. Using the gap on the bottom of the lining to pull through the right way.

  9. Desktop Calendar

    Carefully push out corners.Press and sew the gap in the lining. This can be hand sewn to be invisible or machine sewn as it will be hidden at the bottom of the bag.
