Beginner's Guide to Sketching

Put pencil to paper and master the art of sketching with these tips and tricks

Beginner's Guide to Sketching

The first step in your sketching journey should involve stocking up on the essentials. This includes a sketch pad, pencils for outlining and shading, as well as a sharpener and an eraser.

Before diving into a complex project, it's best to choose something simple, like an apple or a plant. Observation is key, so does the object have a unique angle? How does the light fall on the object? You'll also begin to realise just how incredibly crucial lighting is when adding texture to a sketch.

Pencil control is important when creating a sketch. If you position your hand closer to the nib end of the pencil, you'll have more control and precision, allowing you to create darker strokes. Gripping further up will only enable you to create lighter markings.

If you'd prefer a bit of guidance, you could take a class or buy a step-by-step book that will help you to progress.

The most important tip is never give up! When you first learn a new skill it's best to keep practising until you're satisfied with the outcome.
