How to Make a Croque Monsieur Sandwich

The croque monsieur is France’s version of the much-loved ham and cheese sarnie. Perfect for the whole family, this tasty ‘toasted’ sandwich is filled with grated gruyere cheese and sliced ham, and then topped with more cheese before being fried and baked. If you’re a cheese-loving vegetarian or vegan, then do not despair! You can easily substitute the gruyere cheese with vegan or veggie cheese and the ham with fresh or sun-dried tomatoes to create your very own version of this French classic. Simple!


Makes 2 Sandwiches:

Prep & Cooking Time: 20 minutes


  • 4 Slices of Wholemeal Bread (use vegan-friendly and/or gluten-free bread if you have a vegan or gluten-free diet)
  • 2 tsp of Mustard (use gluten-free and/or vegan-friendly mustard if you have a vegan or gluten-free diet)
  • 80g of Grated Gruyere Cheese (use veggie or vegan cheese if you have a vegetarian or vegan diet)
  • 2 Slices of Ham (use fresh or sun-dried tomatoes if you have a vegetarian or vegan diet)
  • 30g of Unsalted Butter (use a vegan-friendly butter, like soya butter, if you’re vegan)




  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan or gas mark 4). Line a baking tray with baking paper and set it aside.
  2. Spread an even layer of mustard over one side of each slice of bread. Sprinkle half of the grated gruyere cheese over two of the slices and then top them with a slice of ham and a further sprinkling of cheese. Sandwich them together with the two remaining slices of bread, and then sprinkle the remaining cheese on top. (Grate more cheese if you enjoy a generous helping!)
  3. Heat the butter in a frying pan until melted and bubbling. Fry each sandwich on both sides for 2 minutes or until golden-brown.
  4. Transfer the sandwiches to the pre-lined baking trays. Sprinkle ½ a teaspoon of basil over each sandwich, and then bake in the oven for approximately 5 minutes or until the cheese has melted.
  5. Leave the sandwiches on the baking tray to cool for a few minutes after taking them out of the oven, and then transfer them to a serving plate. Cut the sandwiches in half (you can have triangle or squares; we love triangles!) and then serve and enjoy!
