How to Sew On Sequins

Who doesn't love a touch of sparkle on any outfit? Delicate little sequins catch the light perfectly to shimmer and shine all day and night long, but embellishing your own outfits with sequins can be a little fiddly. Luckily, this how-to will guide you through three different techniques to help you master the art of sewing on sequins!

You Will Need:

  • Sequins (flat or cupped)
  • Strong Nylon Thread
  • Seed Beads
  • Bead Threading Needle or a Long, Fine Needle
  • Fabric or a Garment
Baking

METHOD:

Sewing Individual Sequins Method 1:

  1. Secure the thread on the reverse side and position the sequin where you want it to sit.
  2. Bring the needle up through the middle of the sequin and take it back down at the side.
  3. Stitch another to secure the sequin and a third to form a 'Y' shape.

Sewing Individual Sequins Method 2:

  1. Secure the thread on the reverse side, as per method 1, and position your sequin on the material.
  2. Bring the needle up through the middle of the sequin, but this time pick a seed bead, thread it through the needle, and then take the needle back down the middle.
  3. Make a tiny backstitch on the reverse side to secure.

Sewing Sequins in a Row Method:

  1. Position the first sequin on the fabric where you want it to be sewn in place and then stitch from the centre hole and over the right-hand edge.
  2. Bring the needle and thread back through to the right side.
  3. Position the next sequin so that it covers the last stitch. Bring the thread up through the middle hole in the second sequin and over to the right-hand side.
  4. Repeat until you reach the desired length.
