Make a Z Fold

How to Make a Z Fold & Z Fold Pop Up Card

I’m always trying to think of ways to make cards in the easiest way possible and this Z fold card needs very few steps and measurements. I’ve then gone on to make a couple of additions so you can transform it into a fabulous pop up card using some of the latest Time for Tea collections.

You will need:

  • Time for Tea Designs – Shell Phone Stamp and Die Set
  • Time for Tea Designs – Wonderful Waves Stencil
  • Time for Tea Designs – Best Fishes Banner & Border Die Set
  • A4 Double Sided Card
  • White Ink Pad
  • Acetate
  • Pinflair Glue
  • Paper Trimmer
  • Scoreboard
  • Chameleon Pens
  • Chameleon Colour Tops
  • Momento Black Ink Pad

Time to Make: An hour for the Z-Fold card and an additional half an hour for the Pop Up part.

Skill Level: Z Fold Card – Beginner (Z Fold Pop Up Card - Intermediate)

  1. Make a Z Fold Make a 5” Square Card blank. Score the card blank in half at 2.5” and fold back. I have used double sided card for mine but you don’t have to.
  2. Make a Z Fold Cut 1” off the bottom of the card. Turn this over and you get the band for your Z fold card which you adhere to the bottom of the card.
  3. Make a Z Fold Cut another piece of blue card to 12.3cm x 6.5cm and use the wave die to create a background for your card. Adhere to the right hand side of the card.
  4. Make a Z Fold Use the bubbles part of the Waves stencil and ink through the left part of the card with white ink as shown.
  5. Make a Z Fold Die cut ‘Best Fishes’ in black and a stitched frame in white from the Best Fishes Border & Die Set and adhere to the front of the card.
  6. Make a Z Fold Stamp the mermaid and 2 fishes from the Time for Tea Shell Phone Set with Momento black ink and die cut them using the co-ordinating dies from the same set. I used Chameleon Pens and Colour Tops to colour in the images. For the mermaid I used: RD2 pen together with OR4 colour top for the hair, NU00 for the face and PK3 for the cheeks, PK5 pen and BG4 colour top for the body. NU3 and NU4 for the shell phone. For the large fish I used: OR3 and RD3. For the small fish I used: VO4 and YG3. Add the coloured in mermaid and the fishes using foam pads.

How to make the Z-Fold Pop Up card (Follow all the steps above then):

  1. Make a Z Fold Cut two strips 7.5cm x 1.5cm and score and fold to make flaps at 0.5cm on either side along the length.
  2. Make a Z Fold Stick them in the gap as shown.
  3. Make a Z Fold Stamp, die cut and colour in the octopus, jellyfish, reeds and sentiment. To colour the octopus I used: BG3 and PK5, the jellyfish PK5 and the reeds YG3.
  4. Make a Z Fold Add a thin strip of acetate to each of the items in 4. And stick them with glue on to the card as shown. The card will fold perfectly to fit into an envelope.
