7 of the Best Ocean Themed Makes

The seaside is a great source of inspiration for many crafters, and with World Oceans Day calling for the protection of our oceans this June, now is a great time to make a crafty project to celebrate and honour the natural beauty of the sea. Let’s dive in to our seven great makes!

7 of the Best Ocean Themed Makes

1. Papercut Art

Layered papercut artwork looks spectacular on the wall, and it’s also a really relaxing craft for a bit of ‘me time’ after a long day. Beginners can follow Carla Bagshaw’s step-by-step tutorial (complete with templates!) here to create a bird’s eye view of a pretty papercut lake. For those who are more experienced with a craft knife, why not try creating your own seascape?.

2. Seashell Box Frame

Do you have a jar full of seashells and sand sitting in a cupboard? Put your keepsakes to good use with this brilliant craft by Sarah Millsop. Stick your favourite beachy photo in a box frame, then fill it with sand and seashells. Sarah embellished her shells with gems, crystals and pearls to give them extra shimmer and shine. Find the full steps, plus more crafty ways with shells, here.

3. Mixed Media Art

Here’s another option for you seashell collectors: Julie Peasgood of the Crafty Beggars has created a sensational mixed media seashell bouquet. To make the summery display, Julie stuck shells and slate onto some cheap DIY filler mixed with paint and left it to dry overnight. Then, she painted the shells in pretty floral shades and embellished them with Pinflair Pearl Wands (351355) and Pinflair Glitter Wands (480671). For the full steps, click here.

4. Lighthouse Decoration

You can’t have an ocean view without a lighthouse! And this project is a super simple homemade answer to expensive home decor. To create the shape, stack three plain terracotta pots of graduated sizes, then paint with a nautical colour scheme. To finish off your design, fit the bottom pot into a saucer and fill the remaining space with small stones and foliage, then adhere a small solar light to the top. Click here.

5. Knitted Sea Creatures

Sachiyo Ishii is an expert at creating adorable stitched creatures, and her book Mini Knitted Ocean is no exception. With 30 simple knitting patterns for cuddly, nautical critters, there is no shortage of great ideas to get you started – no matter how advanced (or not!) your knitting know-how is. Find the book here.

6. Beach hut Place Mat

Do you have some nautical-themed fabric scraps in your stash that need using up? Our place mat project is the perfect solution, and it’ll have you dreaming of sunny days on the sand in no time. Follow the steps here to create our cute beach huts in time for the summer solstice. For a personal touch, simply embroidery names or initials into the doors.

7. Papercrafts

Channel your inner sea goddess by embellishing your papercraft projects with nautical elements, such as bakers twine and die cut sea creatures, like Couture Creations’ Seagulls Over the Ocean Intricutz Cutting Dies (518008) and Gentle Ocean Intricutz Cutting Dies (517996), which are used in our Seahorse Shaker project. If you need some more inspiration, patterned paper is a good place to start, and Ciao Bella’s Under the Ocean - 12x12 Patterns Pad (515644) has 16 designs to get your creative gears turning.
