Pinwheel Card

Pinwheel Card

“This fun project uses the gorgeous double sided papers from Trimcraft’s First Edition pad to make an original origami style pinwheel card which also works as a great gift card holder!” - Tracey Collett

You will need:

  • First Edition 12 x 12 Paper Pad – Forever Free
  • Paper Trimmer
  • Scoreboard - Love Nicole comes with the diagonal score tool
  • Scissors
  • Scallop Circle Punch or Die
  • Pinflair Book Binding Glue
  • 3d Foam double sided tape

Time to Make: 1+ hours

Skill Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Instructions:

  1. Steam punk wall clock We are using a new 12x12” paper pad from Trimcraft called Forever Free and there are lots of gorgeous double sided sheets to choose from, I have used the floral vine sheet for these projects, a sheet with orange spotty paper, one of the black floral sheets for the topper and you will also find a lovely sheet with sentiments and pictures on it too which we need.

Trim the floral vine sheet into 4 lots of 6”x6” – This way you will be able to 4 of these pinwheel cards from just 1 sheet.
  2. Steam punk wall clock You will need a scoreboard which allows you to score diagonally, some boards have additional attachments for this, I have a Love Nicole scoreboard which has a corner piece which fits in the corner and you can then score on the diagonals. On my board as you will see from the top right photo we line the end of the 6x6 sheet under the triangle that sticks out, this is your starting point, we now want to score at 2 5/8”(Bottom left photo) all the way down the paper, turn and repeat on all sides (bottom right photo).

You will now have a small triangle in the centre of each side, cut those out so that you now have 4 notches in the paper.
  3. Steam punk wall clock If you have diagonal plate on the board, remove that and now place the 6x6 piece into the corner (top left photo), we now want to score at ½” down to the score line point and stop. Turn and repeat on all 4 sides. Burnish all the score lines, folding the main triangles in and the thin strips back on themselves (bottom left photo). When finished you should have a square in the centre & 4 folded panels (bottom right photo).
  4. Steam punk wall clock Decorate the inside of the card with one of the lovely toppers/sentiments from the 12x12 sheet from the Forever Free paper pad, now we need close the folds to create the pinwheel effect. When you fold the triangles down you will notice that folding one way will cover the end of the lower fold (top right photo), this is the way we need to fold each triangle so that each one covers the previous fold. When you get to the last fold this is the one that you tuck under the first fold (bottom left photo). This now means the pinwheel origami fold is complete. I decided to add a belly band for an additional feature to this project.
  5. Steam punk wall clock To create the belly band I have used another one of the papers from the paper pad, I went for the orange spotty paper and trimmed a strip to 1” x 12” I have simply wrapped this around the pinwheel card and then trimmed the excess off that over hung and then glued that down so the band is loose to slide off the pinwheel.

To finish it off I have punched a scallop circle out of one of the black floral papers and stuck that to the front on the belly band using a 3d foam double sided pad. We are all finished but this project can easily be increased to make a larger pinwheel just by doubling the measurements (12 x 12” card stock , scores at 5 2/8” for the first scores, then to create the fold overs it would be 1” then adjust the measurements for the belly band).

A fabulous project for a Thank You Teacher gift, you can add a gift card inside if you’d like too and decorate it in lots of different ways, the choice is completely yours. Happy Crafting.
