How to make Pretty Butterfly Card with Ann-marie Vaux

This is a 2 for 1 project! You can either make a gorgeous Butterfly stamped card or take it to the next level with clever paper cutting to create a 3D Butterfly card. This project shows you both methods and it is ideal for beginners or advanced crafters.

You will need:

  • Fabscraps Bella Rosa Kit
  • White blank card base
  • Mirror Card
  • Selection of Inks for stamping & blending in a range of brown tones
  • Extra general brown cardstock
  • Extra general white cardstock
  • Crystal Gems
  • Tape Runner or Adhesive tape
  • 3D foam
  • Scissors
  • For advanced option
  • Mica powder in gold
  • Waterbrush
  • Craft Knife
  • Stencil – I used a Dot stencil
  • White Fine Liner Pen

Time to Make: 30 minutes to 1 hour

Skill Level: Beginner & Advanced

  1. Cut a layer of gold mirror card for the base of the card to create a matt and using flat glue, attach the layer to the card front.
  2. Then cut a layer of white cardstock to fit the card base to create a layer.
  3. Use a dark brown ink to stamp your sentiment of choice on the white cardstock layer.
  4. Next use the butterfly stamp to start stamping in one corner of the layer.
  5. Carry on stamping the butterfly across the card layer.
  6. Start to ink around the edges to blend the white edge away
  7. Carry on inking all the way around the layer, just lightly to tone it all in.
  8. Cut a piece of general brown cardstock to create a matt for the Butterfly layer and using flat glue attach the butterfly layer to it.
  9. Add 3D foam to the back of the layer and attach to the card front.
  10. The card will now look like this.
  11. Add a few crystal gems between the butterflies, corner to corner.
  12. The finished card – alternatively the following steps will take your Butterfly card to an advanced level.
  13. Follow steps 1 to 7 then using your Gold Mica powder, add a single drop of water to the lid of the Mica, to create a very watery mix, add a drop of water at a time. (Don't worry the lid will dry and the Mica will go back to being a powder in the lid).
  14. Start using the Mica water mix to paint the butterflies.
  15. Paint all of the Butterlies across the card.
  16. Ink around the edges again and ink inwards to the Butterflies.
  17. Place your stencil over each corner in turn and blend ink to achieve a pattern, in the same ink.
  18. Repeat the ink &smp; blending process around the edges to blend in the stencil and to darken the corners.
  19. Next using a craft knife, cut around the edge of one the stamped Butterfly wings, but not the body. This will enable the wings to lift but leave the Butterfly in place.
  20. Carry on cutting the wings out of alternative Butterflies across the layer.
  21. Next attach the brown cardstock layer you have cut out to fit the card to the card using flat glue.
  22. Add 3D foam to the back of the butterfly layer but not near the butterflies.
  23. Attach the layer to the card base.
  24. Pinch the Butterfly wings together carefully so they stand out and away from the card.
  25. Add crystal gems between the butterflies across the card.
  26. Using a white fineliner pen, add some details to the card, just a few dots at the sides of the gems.
  27. The finished card
  28. Both of the finished cards showing both methods.
