How to Make Animal Biscuits

Kids absolutely love biscuits, especially when they come in a fun animal shape! In celebration of it being National Pet Month, we thought we’d show you how to make a delicious batch of animal biscuits that will delight the whole family. Our recipe is simple and requires no advanced skills or equipment, so you can get the kids involved and spend an afternoon baking these treats together. (We know our biscuit animals aren’t the types of animals you’d keep as pets, but we couldn’t resist using our wild-animal cutters! You can use any animal cutters you like, too.)

  • Baking
  • < 1 hour
  • Beginner

  • 300g of Plain Flour
  • 250g of Unsalted Butter (softened)
  • 140g of Caster Sugar
  • 1 Egg Yolk
  • 2 tsp of Vanilla Extract
  • Decorating Icing (optional)

  • Mixing Bowl
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Flour Sifter
  • Rolling Pin
  • Clingfilm
  • Baking Paper
  • Baking Trays
  • Wire Cooling Rack
  • Animal Biscuit Cutters

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C fan or gas mark 4) and line the baking trays with baking paper.

  2. Add the butter and caster sugar to a mixing bowl. Using a mixing spoon, combine the ingredients using a folding action.

  3. Add 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract and an egg yolk to the butter and sugar. Using the mixing spoon, beat the ingredients until well combined.

  4. Sift the flour over the butter mixture. Using the mixing spoon, fold the ingredients together until they begin to combine into a dough.

  5. Using your hands, continue to combine the biscuit dough until it comes together completely. Wrap the biscuit dough in clingfilm and place in the fridge for 10 – 15 minutes

  6. Place the biscuit dough onto a floured surface and sprinkle a layer of flour over the dough and rolling pin. Going from the centre, gently roll your dough so that it’s evenly flat with a 2cm thickness.

  7. Now for the really fun part! Use the biscuit cutters to cut as many animal shapes as you can.

  8. Place the biscuits on the baking trays; make sure you leave a gap between each one. Bake the biscuits for 10 – 12 minutes or until they’re golden.

  9. Leave the biscuits to cool for 5 minutes after taking them out of the oven, and then transfer them to a wire rack to cool completely. (You can ice and decorate your biscuits in any way you like, or you can enjoy them as they are. The choice is yours!)
