Christmas Fabric Gift Bag

Taking care of our planet and finding reusable alternatives are a great way to spread the Festive spirit and what better way than to create this beautiful fabric gift bag that is a gift in itself! Plus it can be reused year after year! You can easily adjust the measurements of this project to fit your particular size gift.

You Will Need:

  • 4 x Christmas themed Fat Quarters (2 pairs of 2 different designs)
  • Some decorative string or cord
  • 2 decorative buttons
  • Complimentary 1” bias binding
  • Sewing scissors
  • Complimentary sewing thread
  • Straight pins
  • Sewing needle
  • Tape measure
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Pattern Master or similar dressmaker’s ruler (optional)

  1. Place your 4 fat quarters right sides together in pairs of matching designs. Stitch around three sides leaving one short side open. Trim off the corners to remove bulk.

  2. Fold the fabric pockets sideways to form a triangle in the corners, lining up the side and bottom seams. Measure 8cm up from the point of the corner along the seam line and mark a point. Draw a line straight across at right angles to the line of stitching (this is achieved more easily with a Pattern Master or similar dressmaker’s ruler).

  3. Turn the top fabric pocket round the right way and press all of the seams that you have stitched. Tuck the lining fabric pocket inside the outer pocket, lining up the top edges, side seams, and pushing the corners into place. Run a line of top stitching around the top edge of the bag close to the edge, securing the two layers together.

  4. Fasten the bias binding around the top edge enclosing the raw edge inside.

  5. Fold down the top edge of your bag and find the middle point. Hand stitch a button to the body of the bag and another to the top flap. As you stitch the button to the top flap catch in the end of the piece of cord underneath. To fasten your gift bag wrap the cord in a figure of 8 around the 2 buttons. Your Gift bag is now complete.
