Tools and materials required

  • Fabric
  • picture frame
  • cardboard
  • wadding
  • scissors
  • pen
  • needle
  • thread.

Choose your fabric and a frame. Take the frame apart.

Use the frame to find a picture you want to display on the fabric. Take your time and remember the frame can be horizontal or vertical.

Use the glass as a template. Draw around the glass. Leave about a 2cm (1inch) space and draw around again. This second line is the cutting line.

Cut the fabric out around the cutting line.

Using the glass as a template, cut out a piece of cardboard and wadding the same size as the glass.

Layer your picture. Place your fabric right side down, top with the wadding and then the cardboard.

Using long lengths of thread. Secure the thread to the fabric on one side. Put your needle though the opposite side and pull tight. Take the thread back and forth to lace. Turn around to the front and check it is straight. The fabric will move if you need to straighten. Gently pull it into line. When you are happy with placement the second two sides can be laced.

Without using the glass construct your picture in the usual way. You can now enjoy your beautiful picture or be creative and give it a decorative and practical use.

By using pins it can hang light items like knitting stitch markers.

A grandmother’s brooch that has been handed down makes a beautiful keepsake.
