Mermaid Notebook Cover

Our in-house creative, Louise Dunbar, has been using Brea Reese Inks to produce a colourful canvas. This fantastic project is an easy way to add eye-catching colour to your home decor - check out Louise's step-by-step instructions, and have a go yourself!

  • Papercraft
  • < 1 hour
  • Beginner

You Will Need:

  • A5 Notebook
  • Black cardstock
  • White super smooth cardstock
  • Stamp
  • Brea Reese watercolour inks and brushes
  • Texture paste
  • Black ink
  • Stencil
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Low tack tape
  • 3D foam pads
  • Spritzer bottle

  1. Cut the black cardstock to form the mat for the front cover, then cut the white cardstock to create the layer for the front cover.

  2. mermaid-notebook-cover
  3. Take your Brea Reese inks and drop some ink onto a craft sheet. (I used lake blue, ocean green, pink and ultramarine blue for this.)

  5. Spray the craft sheet with water from your sprtizer bottle, then lay your white super smooth on top, moving it around the craft sheet, (this will give it a wavy pattern and allow the colours to mix together.)

  7. Add more ink and water to the craft sheet and repeat the process of moving it around, to add layers of colour and dimension to the cardstock (using the super smooth cardstock will allow the ink to glide rather than soak in, as it would if you were to use watercolour cardstock) Set with a heat gun.

  9. Take a little dollop of texture paste out of the tub and pop it onto your craft mat. Now add a few drops of lake blue ink to the paste and mix until you have achieved a light blue colour.

  11. Tape the stencil down to one corner of your design, and apply the paste through the stencil onto the cardstock. Repeat on the opposite corner, and dry off with your heat gun. Don’t put the unused paste back into the tub, because you’ll contaminate the whole tub!

  13. Stamp your chosen images onto another piece of white super smooth cardstock using black ink.

  15. Now colour in your image using the Brea Reese inks as paint. When you have coloured in your image, dry it off with your heat gun, then cut round the images and decide where to place them.

  16. Stick the black mat onto the front of the book then layer the cover on top of the black, and there you have it, your very own notebook cover! Why not personalise it with a name and gift it to someone special?
