Snowman Christmas Bunting

This festive bunting looks fantastic hung over doorways, mantle pieces and down the stairwell for jolly splash of Christmas joy. This crocheted snowman bunting will be sure to last for years and years. This pattern is written without abbreviations.

Materials

  • 2 x 50 gram balls of Patons Diploma DK in red
  • 1 x 50 gram ball of Patons Diploma DK in cream/white
  • Oddments of DK for hats, scarves, faces and carrot noses
  • 4mm crochet hook

Instructions:

For the Foundation chain

  1. Using red yarn make 30 chain and turn. Row 1 – Make 1 double crochet in 2nd chain from hook, then double crochet to end. Turn, (29 stitches).

  2. Row 2 - Make 1 chain, then make 1 double crochet in 2nd stitch from hook and double crochet along to last 2 stitches. Double crochet 2 together, turn. Repeat row 2 until there are only 2 stitches left. Double crochet 2 together, fasten off.

For the Top Edging

  1. Using cream yarn make 20 chain, then double crochet 29 stitches along the foundation edge of each of the 5 bunting triangles, after the last triangle make 21 chain, then turn.

  2. Row 1 – Make 1 double crochet in 2nd stitch from hook, then double crochet in each stitch of the chain, then double crochet along all the bunting and along the 20 chain at the other end. Turn.

  3. Row 2 – Change to red yarn. Make 1 double crochet in 2nd stitch from hook, then 1 double crochet in each stitch all along the row. Turn.

  4. Row 3 – Change to cream yarn. Make 1 double crochet in 2nd stitch from hook, then 1 double crochet in each stitch all along the row. Turn.

  5. Row 4 – (Shell Edging) Make 1 chain, then 1 double crochet in 2nd chain from hook. *miss 2 stitches, make 6 trebles all into next stitch, miss 2 stitches, make 1 double crochet in next stitch* , repeat from * to * to end. Fasten off.

For the Snowman

  1. Head Foundation Ring- Make 5 chain and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

  2. Round 1 – Make 3 chain (counts as 1 treble). Then make 15 treble into the ring, join with a slip stitch into 3rd stitch of 3 chain at the beginning of the round. Fasten off.

For the Snowman’s Body

  1. Foundation Ring – Make 5 chain and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.

  2. Round 1 – Make 3 chain (counts as 1 treble). Then make 15 treble into the ring, join with a slip stitch into 3rd stitch of 3 chain at the beginning of the round. (16 trebles).

  3. Round 2 – Make 3 chain (counts as 1 treble), 1 treble into same space. Then make 2 treble into each stitch of the previous round, join with a slip stitch into 3rd stitch of 3 chain at the beginning of the round. (32 trebles). Fasten off.

For the Top Hat (Optional)

  1. Row 1 – (Brim) Make 9 chain, turn and starting in 2nd chain from hook make 8 double crochet. Fasten off.

  2. Row 2 – (Crown) Re-join yarn at 3rd stitch along the row. Make 1 chain and one Double crochet in same stitch. Then make 1 double crochet in each of next 3 stitches, (4 stitches in total). Turn.

  3. Rows 3 and 4 – 1 chain then 4 double crochet along the row. Fasten off.

For the Scarf

  1. Make 3 chain, turn and starting in 2nd chain from hook make 2 double crochet, turn.

  2. Rows 2 – 14 - Make 1 chain and starting in 2nd chain from hook make 2 double crochet, turn. Fasten off.

  3. Stitch snowman head and body onto bunting, overlapping chin of snowman head to upper body.

  4. With orange yarn and sewing needle, make 6 chain coming out from centre hole in middle of the snowman’s face. Fold chain in half and stitch back through the same place on face and secure yarn, to make carrot nose.

  5. Make french knots, or small stitches to form eyes and mouth on the face and a centre button in the middle of his body. Alternatively you could use small black beads. Stitch scarf from left side of the snowman’s neck to right side of neck. Fold “long front piece” of scarf in half to hang down over the snowman’s body and make a couple of sewing stitches to secure into place.
