Spooky Bat Decoration by Charlotte Newland



This cute, yet surprisingly creepy, bat decoration is quick to make for us last-minute decorators! Hang a few of them from your front doorway for a spooky entrance to your home.

You Will Need:

  • Batwing template [DOWNLOAD HERE]
  • 5 sheets of black tissue paper (approx 50cm by 70cm)
  • 1 Polystyrene ball (4cm – 6cm)
  • Floral wire
  • 40cm Ribbon
  • 2 Sheets of black felt (at least 20cm square)
  • Marker pen
  • Glue gun
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Use a serrated knife to carefully cut the polystyrene ball in two, then draw pupils on each half with the black marker pen.

  2. Use the template to cut four wing shapes from the black felt.

  4. Layer the wings in pairs and machine or hand sew around the edges to strengthen them and make them less floppy.

  6. Cut the tissue paper in half to make ten sheets that are 50cm by 35cm, then layer the sheets on top of each other. Fold the pile of tissue paper like a fan starting at the short edge, pressing down on the edges of each fold firmly with a ruler to make a nice strong crease. Make each fold about 3cm wide.

  8. Cut around the ends of the folded tissue paper to make a nice, smooth round shape. Wrap a piece of floral wire around the centre of the folded tissue paper to secure, and tie the piece of ribbon around the wire.

  10. Carefully pull the paper layers apart, separating them to make the pom-pom really fluffy, then use the glue gun to attach the wings and eyes. Hang your super spooky bat decoration from your front door or a light fitting and have a happy Halloween!
