Spooky Cobweb Patch by Jennie Rayment

Sew some strips, cut into shapes, stitch and add a little appliqué to make this cunningly creative Halloween design. Ideal as cushion or table mat.

You Will Need:

  • 5 - 6 Fat Quarter pack – (Halloween colours or spooky patterns)
  • Simplicity Studio Simpli-EZ 45 Degree Triangle
  • EZ Quilting Easy Angle 6.5in Acrylic Template
  • Rotary Cutter Replacement Blade and Dafa Cutting Mat Bundle
  • Easy Square and Easy Rule II
  • Heirloom Premium Cotton Batting - 45 x 60 inch
  • 12½” Easy Square Acrylic Template
  • Thick black wool or thin black bias binding for web effect


  1. Cut: One 1½ x 22” strip - Orange. Two 1½ x 22” strips - Purple. Join all three strips to make striped band. Use ¼” S/A (Seam Allowance). Press seams open and flat.

  3. Place EZ 45 degree triangle on strip. Align top of template with edge of fabric strip. Cut one triangle. From remainder of fabric strip cut seven more triangles.

  5. Join the triangles in four sets of two. Press seams open and flat.

  7. Join two of the sets to make one half of completed design, repeat with other two sets. Join both halves to create octagonal design as shown. Press seams open. (It is bulky in the centre and if the points don’t meet totally - the appliquéd web will conceal!)

  9. Cut one 3½” strip in Green. Using Easy Angle triangle. Cut four half square triangles.

  11. Sew one triangle to each corner of octagon.

  13. Place 12½” acrylic square on sewn block. Trim any excess fabrics back to form 9½” block.

  15. Cut: Two 2 x 9½” strips - Green
    Two 1½ x 12½” strips - Green
    Sew short strips first to sides of block, open out then attach remaining longer strips. Press seams towards outer edge.

  17. Applique or couch black wool or a thin bias binding over the seams. Extend appliqué to edge of fabric.

  18. Cut: Two 1½ x 12½” strips - Yellow
    Two 1½ x 14½” strips - Green
    Sew to sides of block as Step 8.

  19. Press all seams, mount onto wadding.

  20. Add extra interest with some machine or hand quilting.

    Finishing For cushions: Sew round outer edge of both layers to hold wadding and fabric firmly together. Cut cushion back from either the remaining Fat Quarter (if using 6 pack) or join whatever fabric is left. For table mats: Sew round outer edge of both layers to hold wadding and fabric firmly together. Use the last FQ or make up the backing fabric from remaining materials. Pin all layers together and tack round outer raw edge. Bind raw edge in your preferred fashion.
