Strip Quilt

Stitch bright and bold fabrics together to create a cosy quilt.

  • Sewing
  • 3-4 hours
  • Beginner

Tools and materials required

  • Cotton Lawn fabric, Zandra
  • Rhodes Flower Garden collection, various prints
  • 2oz quilt wadding
  • Plain cotton backing fabric

Finished quilt measures 110cm x 122cm

Cut your chosen fabrics into strips measuring 6cm x 25cm. For this quilt you will need 20 pieces of each print. Stitch five different strips right sides together, end-to-end, using a 5mm seam allowance, then press.

Create a second strip in the same way, offsetting the prints by two positions. Sew the sections together, matching up the seams for a neater finish. Repeat the process, offsetting the prints each time, then join together.

Iron the finished quilt top on the reverse, pressing the seams to one side to keep them flat. Cut and press a piece of plain cotton backing the same size and sandwich a piece of wadding between the two layers.

Pin the fabrics together at regular intervals and topstitch the layers with a long stitch in co-ordinating thread along main seam lines.

Stitch 3cm wide strips of plain cotton end-to-end to make a continuous length and sew onto the back of the quilt, mitring the corners and overlapping the join. Fold the binding to the front, then turn under 5mm on the raw edge. Topstitch into place around the edges.
