How to Make Pug Cupcakes

These pug-themed chocolate cupcakes are seriously cute – and delicious! The perfect baking project to celebrate National Pet Month, these cupcakes can be made with the kids thanks to our simple recipe and method. There are no advanced skills or equipment needed, just basic cupcake ingredients and equipment, some chocolate, and a little creativity. Simple!

    Prep and Cooking Time: Approx. 40 minutes
    Makes 12 Cupcakes

Cupcake Ingredients:

  • 100g of Plain Flour
  • 140g of Caster Sugar
  • 40g of Unsalted Butter (softened)
  • 20g of Cocoa Powder
  • 120ml of Whole Milk
  • 1 ½ tsp of Baking Powder
  • 1 Whole Egg
  • ¼ tsp of Vanilla Extract
  • Pinch of Salt
  • Chocolate Chips (optional)

Icing Ingredients:

  • 300g of Icing Sugar
  • 100g of Unsalted Butter (softened)
  • 40g of Cocoa Powder
  • 40ml of Milk
  • Milk or Dark Chocolate (to melt)
  • White Chocolate Buttons
  • Milk or Dark Chocolate Buttons



  1. Preheat your oven to 170°C (150°C fan or gas mark 3) and place 12 cupcake cases in the muffin tin.
  2. Add the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, sugar and butter to a mixing bowl and whisk until well combined. (You can add chocolate chips at this stage if you want to make chocolate-chip cupcakes.)
  3. Pour the milk into a jug and add the vanilla extract and egg. Whisk the ingredients until well combined.
  4. Pour half of the milk mixture over the cupcake mixture and whisk the ingredients. Gradually pour the rest of the milk mixture into the bowl and whisk until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  5. Spoon an equal amount of mixture into each cupcake case and then place the cupcakes in the oven to bake for 20 – 25 minutes, or until risen and firm.
  6. Leave the cupcakes in the muffin tin for 5 – 10 minutes after taking them out of the oven, and then transfer the cupcakes to a wire rack to cool completely.
  7. To make the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl and add the cocoa powder and butter. Using a hand whisk or an electric whisk, beat the ingredients together until they are well combined.
  8. To melt the chocolate, break the chocolate into chunks and place them in a heatproof mixing bowl. Fill a saucepan with water and heat on the hob until simmering. Place the bowl over the saucepan to heat the chocolate; make sure the water doesn’t spill. You need to stir the chocolate continuously until it is smooth and melted.
  9. Using a tablespoon, gradually add the milk to the icing mixture and then pour in the melted chocolate. Using either a hand whisk or an electric whisk, whisk the ingredients until they are well combined.
  10. Pour the chocolate icing into a piping bag. For each cupcake, you need to add a milk chocolate button or a dark chocolate button for the nose, and two white chocolate buttons for the eyes. Pipe a dot of icing onto the back of each button to secure it to the cupcake.
  11. Pipe chocolate icing around the buttons to create a brow and muzzle. You can then pipe a dot of chocolate icing onto the white chocolate buttons to give the eyes definition.
