Simply in Stitches by Tina Lowther

This felt notebook cover uses some embroidery and lace as a starting point. It is an opportunity to use it as a sampler to have fun with your own ideas and use different elements to embellish your cover, using vintage materials or trimmings from a child's outgrown clothing.

You will need:

  • Notebook
  • Felt
  • Beads
  • Lace
  • Ribbon
  • Embroidery thread
  • Card
  • Ruler
  • Frixion pen ( a pen that is removed by friction or heat)
  • Needle
  • Scissors

Time to Make: 2 hours

Skill Level: Advanced

Instructions:

  1. Measure and cut out felt cover with a 0.5 extra allowance around the edges. Allow for the spine. Then cut 2 sides (inside) 5cm wide
  2. Cut the lace the length of felt. Fold the felt cover in half to find position. You may want to pin in place.
  3. Use Lazy fern stitch to connect the lace. First make a vertical stitch. Bring the needle up on the left of this stitch.
  4. Bring the needle down on the right and up at the base point with the thread below the needle. Repeat down the lace following the flow of your lace pattern.
  5. Sew on beads to the lace.
  6. Make a heart template with the card. Folding the card heart in half and cutting will make it even. Draw around the template with a pen that will remove with heat or friction.
  7. Split stitch around the hearts. Make a stitch with doubled thread. Bring the needle up 0.5cm from the first stitch.
  8. Push the needle down through the 2 threads of the previous stitch.
  9. Draw 3 circles in each heart as a guide for the flowers. Back stitch the flowers with 5 or 6 petals.
  10. Sew on beads to the centers.
  11. Blanket stitch around the cover. Starting at the inside middle bottom right and attaching the sides and ribbon at the same time. The ribbon it sewn between the 2 layers of felt. The ribbon is kept longer than needed until the end, then cut to required length.
  12. Slide the notebook into the sleeve.
