5 Smart stitched school accessories

Send your young professors back to school in style this year with a selection of fabric essentials. Whether you’re an experienced sewist or new to the craft, there is a host of gorgeous makes to stitch for students ahead of the new term. Keep things coordinated for those who like order in their lives, or get creative with a riot of prints and fabrics that’ll brighten up the school day.

5 Smart stitched school accessories

1. Notebook cover

Help them keep school-ready with a journal that they’ll love to use. These are great fun to make as you can spend time mixing and matching your fabric off-cuts for a coordinated look. Alternatively pick up a set of fat quarters so you’re guaranteed the perfect mix-and-match. You can take it further by stitching a pen pocket to the front and fixing a button and fabric-covered elastic closure to the side.

2. Device covers

Encourage them to store ipads and devices in a padded pouch to keep tech scratch-free and in tip top condition. Choose an eye-catching fabric for the outer, but don’t forget that the lining is all part of the design. Soft cotton is ideal against delicate screens, and if you’re worried about zips catching and scratching, simply replace them with a Velcro fastening.

3. Reusable lunch bags

A healthy homemade lunch isn’t just cost-effective... filling youngsters with wholesome grub will aid their concentration and learning. Send them off to school each day with energy-boosting snacks all packaged up in a reusable lunch bag. These are super-simple to make and require a simple button and loop fastening to keep food fresh all day. Along with a sturdy fabric, choose an eye-catching button as the finishing touch – we love the Liberty fabric selection from House of Alistair.

4. School bag

A school bag is an everyday essential. Make sure that it is used with pride by choosing fabrics and colours that they’ll love to show off. Durability is key, so choose fabrics that are easy to clean and that will withstand the rigours of the school day. Don’t forget that a secure zip fastening is a must, while adding some inside pockets will help them keep all their bits and bobs organised for a smooth day of learning. We love the Just Bold Prints African wax fabric – it's bright and cheerful, and perfect for bag making.

5. Fabric folder cover

While most students will rely on computers for their studies, essential notes are best kept safe in a good old-fashioned folder. Make up a coordinated set of fabric-covered ones – one for each subject – to help keep them organised. Why not stitch the name of the subject onto a strip of calico using free-hand embroidery and fuse it to the front? That way they will always be able to find what they’re looking for.
