Tie-dye Notebook

Tie-dye Notebook

“Tie-dying is a simple technique where the fabric is folded, crumpled or bound before dye is applied. The result is a unique pattern where the areas tied up have resisted the dye. The technique can be used to create a huge range of patterns so there are endless possibilities!” - Sarah Jackman-Read

You will need:

  • Natural fabric in a pale colour
  • Hard backed notebook
  • Pinkfresh Studio Watercolour – Sky Blue
  • Wooden craft sticks
  • Elastic bands
  • Plastic cup
  • Paintbrush
  • Cling film
  • Scissors
  • Double-sided tape
  • White card

Time to Make: 1 Hour (plus washing and drying)

Skill Level: Intermediate

  1. Wrap fabric around your chosen notebook then cut the fabric approximately 3cm wider all the way around. Wash with a little detergent then leave damp.

  2. Happy Birthday shaker card

Protect your work surface with cling film then lay the fabric out flat. Starting at the bottom concertina fold as equally as possible.

  3. Happy Birthday shaker card

Turn the folded fabric vertically then lay a lolly stick underneath it towards the top. Lay another lolly stick on the front in the same place then fix them in place with elastic bands. Repeat with more sticks down the fabric, placing some at angles.

  4. Happy Birthday shaker card

Place some drops of ink in a plastic cup then apply the colour near to each stick. Turn the fabric over then repeat.

  5. Happy Birthday shaker card

Add some water to the ink then apply to the areas next to the neat ink. Wrap the fabric up in the cling film then leave for at least an hour.

  6. Happy Birthday shaker card

Rinse the fabric to get rid of the majority of the ink then remove the sticks and rinse again until the water runs clear. Wash with a little detergent, leave to dry naturally then iron.

  7. Happy Birthday shaker card

Lay the notebook on the fabric, fold the edges inside and secure in place with double-sided tape. Trim white card to fit the inside of the cover then adhere in place.
