How to Make Traditional Butterfly Cupcakes

Butterfly cupcakes are a classic tasty treat loved by kids and adults alike. With family and friends visiting this Easter, you can whip up a batch of these cupcakes in no time and guarantee happy tummies and lots of smiles! Better yet, you can get the kids involved, too! The recipe is easy to follow and requires no advanced skills or equipment, so it’s absolutely perfect for junior bakers.

Prep & Cooking Time: Approx. 40 minutes

  • Makes 10 cupcakes

Cupcake Ingredients:

  • 100g of Self-Raising Flour
  • 100g of Butter (softened)
  • 100g of Caster Sugar
  • ½ tsp of Baking Powder
  • 15ml of Milk
  • 2 Large Eggs

Buttercream Ingredients (Filling):

  • 75g of Icing Sugar
  • 50g of Butter (softened)
  • 2 tsp of Strawberry Jam
  • Icing Sugar (for dusting)

  1. Preheat your oven to 190°C (170°C fan or gas mark 5). While your oven heats, place 10 cupcake cases in a standard 12-cup muffin tin.
  2. Place the sugar, butter, flour, baking powder, milk and eggs into a mixing bowl and whisk until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
  3. Divide the mixture evenly between the cupcake cases. We recommend placing a generous dollop of mixture in each case using a tablespoon.
  4. Bake the cupcakes for 15 to 20 minutes until they’re golden, risen and firm. After taking the cupcakes out of the oven, leave them to cool for 5 minutes.
  5. Transfer the cupcakes to a cooling rack and allow them to cool for a further 10 to 15 minutes.
  6. While the cupcakes cool, prepare the buttercream. Place the softened butter and sifted icing sugar into a bowl and whisk until the mixture is smooth.
  7. Once the cupcakes are cool, slice the top off each cupcake and then slice each cupcake top down the centre.
  8. Spread a small dollop of jam over each of the cupcakes. Fill a piping bag with the buttercream and pipe over the top of the jam.
  9. Take the sliced cupcake tops and arrange them on top of the buttercream to resemble butterfly wings. (This is our favourite part!)
  10. Finally, dust your cupcakes with icing sugar and enjoy!
