6 Crafting Trends You Need to Try

There are so many reasons why these ingenious crafty ideas have become so popular. Don’t believe us? Try them out yourself!

6 Crafting Trends You Need to Try

1 Colouring

Adult colouring books have been popular for quite some time, and when you consider that the benefits of whiling away an afternoon colouring pretty designs include reduced stress and anxiety, it’s easy to see why! It’s not just born artists that can get involved with this trend either; anyone can colour and there’s plenty of choice for those who do – there are books dedicated to everything from woodland scenes to Harry Potter. The My-Thyme Mini Celestial Adult Colouring Book is a great one to start with.

2 Calligraphy

Another fun way to practise mindfulness, calligraphy is undoubtedly in the midst of a resurgence. Once you get the hang of the technique, you’ll soon be adding flair to cards, scrapbooks, gift tags, party favours and every project where you deem it even remotely possible to incorporate elegant lettering. Why not experiment with brush lettering, too? You can easily get started with the Bouncy Lettering Collection from Kelly Creates.

3 Eco-friendly projects

Crafters hate wastage, so luckily there are plenty of projects out there designed to make a positive difference for the environment. Encourage birds into your garden with a DIY bird house, or crochet a bouquet of everlasting flowers instead of picking blooms from Mother Nature. A great way to use up old craft scraps or clothes is to make a rag rug – simply sew your odds and ends together to create long strips that you can work with.

4 Candle making

It’s a fact that candles make perfect gifts, so it’s no surprise that candle-making has taken the crafting world by storm. Plus, it’s a super fun and interesting process! If you’re not sure where to begin, opt for a kit like the Ezi Candle-making Starter Kit, or simplify things with a tutorial. Sarah Jackman-Read’s step-by-step scented candle tutorial ticks all the right boxes.

5 Dirty pouring

If you haven’t heard of dirty pouring, it involves mixing multiple paint colours in one container before pouring it out onto a canvas or other materials to create a distinctive pattern – and it’s so much fun! The only rule is to embrace the messiness and freedom, so stock up on acrylic paints and get creative. You could even try a double dirty pour and tip two cups with a mix of contrasting colours in each at the same time.

6 Galaxy designs

Whether you love it or hate is, galaxy is still going strong in the crafting world. We love making nebular backgrounds from watercolour paints or inks (because who doesn’t!), but Shabneez Khan-Muztar is taking the theme to new heights. Her step-by-step cardmaking tutorial using Nuvo Embellishment Mousse is out of this world!
