5 Ways to Upcycle Old Wine Bottles

Most of us probably send our wine bottles straight to the recycling bin, but every time you do, you’re throwing away an amazing material! The silhouettes and colours found in most wine bottles make them perfect for a whole range of crafts, and they work particularly well in home decor projects. To give your bottles a second life, we’ve collated some of our favourite ideas that make excellent use of these versatile glass containers. Which one will you try first?

5 Ways to Upcycle Old Wine Bottles

1. Vase

EA classic wine bottle shape is perfect for holding some pretty blooms. This tutorial by Louise Dunbar gives you double the crafting fun – learn how to transform a bottle into a beautiful vase, then whip up some colourful vellum flowers, too, so that the beauty never fades!

2. Chalkboard sentiments

Chalkboard paint is such a fun way to display messages. Simply cover a few bottles with the paint, then add whatever message you like! You can squeeze a whole sentiment onto one bottle, but we think a word spread over a whole row of bottles is much more effective. For perfect calligraphy every time, try using a chalk pen like the Uni Posca Chalk Pen instead of regular chalk – you’ll be able to get a much more precise line.

3. lights

A wine bottle filled with battery operated fairy lights gives off such a beautiful twinkly effect, perfect for creating a sophisticated ambience at a dinner party. Take this effect one step further by cutting out tree shapes from black paper that will block portions of the light and create a bold statement. For precise results, die-cut your tree shape using a pretty forest scene, like the Creatables Die Forest Trees from Mariann.

4. Message in a bottle

Reminisce about sunny seaside trips with a rustic message in a bottle! The whole family can have so much fun coming up with a message to slot into the bottle, and decorating with beachy embellishments like some chunky rope (House of Alistair Cotton Rope) and pretty shells (Beach Shells Size 9-40mm Hole Size 1-1.5mm 120 G). This project looks great sitting on a bathroom shelf, but if you can get to the beach, why not throw your message in and see if you get a reply?

5. Bird feeder

If you’re looking for an excuse to get your toolkit out, this wine bottle bird feeder is the perfect project for you! It’s a little more complex than some of the other upcycling projects, but once you’ve got the hang of it, you’ll be able to enjoy seeing all the different birds visiting your garden. Check out a tutorial here.
