Introduction to the project: There’s nothing better than giving a hand-made gift or card to family and friends. This is a great little project if you want to dip your toes into free motion machine applique. You will be working with 5” x 5” square of fabric just a few layers thick, so, very easy to work with and a great little scrap buster too!
Cut the largest piece of fabric, roughly 6” x 6” this will be used as the background. Apply the same amount of interfacing to the reverse side of the fabric following the manufacturer’s instructions.
Using the pinking shears, cut the fabric down to 5” x 5”.
Roughly cut to size the remaining 3 pieces of fabric fabric. Using either a light box or the window method, trace the designs from the template onto the fabrics.
Following the manufacturer’s instructions fuse the bonding agent or web onto the wrong side of these pieces with an iron. This is double faced adhesive and later will be ironed into position. Carefully cut the shapes out.
Peel the backing of the shapes, leaving the glue behind and position them on the larger square, iron in position.
For free machine embroidery, loosen the thumbscrew and remove the presser foot holder with foot attached. Attach the embroidery or darning foot to your machine and tighten the thumbscrew firmly with the screwdriver. Lower the feed dogs before you start sewing. Practice on some scrap fabric as this technique can be quite tricky at first but once you’ve mastered it your only limit is your imagination.
When stitching you can use thread which blends with the fabric or make a feature by using vivid colours, shiny rayons or metallic threads which can look very effective and give a further dimension, I have used a deep blue thread for definition. Stitch round each part of the design, going free style for the handle, two or three times.
Sew on the buttons by either hand or machine.
Stamp the sentiment on white card in a co-ordinating colour, glue onto co-ordinating card stock.
Add glue to the reverse of the fabric, position in the centre of the card blank, smooth out from the centre
Add foam pads onto the reverse of the sentiment and position at the base of the design.
Congratulations, your card is complete, happy gifting!
